The Department of Behavioral Health (DBH) certifies a network of community-based providers to provide substance use disorder (SUD) services including detoxification, residential and outpatient services based on individual need. DBH also provides a range of prevention and recovery services. Many adults with a substance use disorder also have a mental illness. DBH supports integrated care with screening, diagnosis and treatment for both mental and substance use disorders to treat the whole person for the best health outcomes.
To enroll in services, call or visit the DBH Assessment and Referral Center (ARC) or one of the community-based SUD providers listed below. SUD providers are located across the District. You can choose one that best serves your needs.

Services
DBH promotes access to a continuum of quality substance abuse prevention, treatment and recovery support services.
Prevention services are aimed at reducing factors that increase the risk of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use and abuse among children and youth, as well as promoting the likelihood of healthy, drug-free youth and their families.
Treatment services are based on individual assessment and referrals for appropriate levels of substance abuse treatment including outpatient, intensive outpatient, residential, detoxification and stabilization, and medication assisted therapy.
Recovery services include wrap-around services, such as care coordination, mentoring, coaching, educational support, job readiness and training, public transportation and other services to support and sustain recovery. These services build on hope which is the foundation of recovery. The recovery process is very personal and recognizes that substance use disorder is a chronic disease and setbacks may occur. Resilience is key to sustained recovery.
