Washington, DC—The District of Columbia Department of Mental Health will kick off the new Forensic Fellowship Program in Psychiatry at Saint Elizabeths Hospital with a community event at 6 pm, Wednesday, September 18, 2013, featuring Dr. Peter L. Beilenson, co-author of the acclaimed book Tapping Into the Wire: The Real Urban Crisis.

 

Dr. Beilenson will explore urban health and public health policies using scenes from the hit series, “The Wire”. Currently the Chief Executive Officer of Evergreen Health Cooperative, Dr. Beilenson served as the Baltimore Health Commissioner during the administrations of former Mayors Kurt Schmoke and Martin J. O’Malley. He has more than 20 years’ experience in public health leadership.

 

“We are very excited about the new Forensic Fellowship Program,” said Stephen T. Baron, Director of the Department of Mental Health. The Hospital has an excellent clinical leadership and has trained generations of new forensic psychiatrists.” The one-year Forensic Fellowship Program is approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

 

Dr. Patrick J. Canavan, Saint Elizabeths Chief Executive Officer, will highlight the improvements taking place at the Hospital and moderate  a community dialogue about public health issues discussed in Dr. Beilenson’s presentation and book.

 

The event is free and open to the public. Clinical professionals including psychologists and social workers can earn 1.5 Continuing Education Units.
