Department of Behavioral Health Recognized by National Anti-Drug Coalition

The District of Columbia Department of Behavioral Health has received the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) 2015 Outstanding State Member Award for its support of local anti-drug coalitions and substance abuse prevention programs.
 
In announcing the award, the CADCA said the Department has “greatly improved the prevention infrastructure in the District of Columbia.” Through the Addiction Prevention and Recovery Administration (APRA), the Department supports four Prevention Centers that conducts prevention activities across all eight wards.

Department of Behavioral Health Invites Public Comment on Report Detailing Progress Curbing Illegal Tobacco Sales to Youth

Washington, DC –The Department of Behavioral Health is requesting public comment on the Fiscal Year 2015 Annual Synar Report which details its work to reduce youth tobacco access. Last year, the Department conducted 378 random, unannounced inspections of retail outlets to identify violators of the law prohibiting the sale of tobacco products to anyone younger than 18 years of age.

Deadline Nears to Apply for Peer Specialist Certification Training

Washington, DC—The deadline to apply for the  2014 peer specialist certification training class is February 28, 2014. Sponsored by the District of Columbia Department of Behavioral Health,  the class is open to individuals who self-identify as receiving or previously receiving behavioral health services through the public system, and who demonstrate personal recovery. In addition, to be eligible, an applicant must be at least 18 years of age with a high school diploma or equivalent and a District resident.

Great American Smokeout Aims to Curb Smoking

Washington, DC—The District of Columbia Department of Behavioral Health is sponsoring a Great American Smokeout on Thursday, November 21, 2013 to promote smoking cessation and offer help to smokers who want to quit. Held on National Great American Smokeout Day, the event features speakers from anti-smoking organizations and entertainment from smoking prevention youth groups and starts at 5 pm, at the Marshall Heights, Lloyd D. Smith Building, 3939 Benning Road, NE.

New Department of Behavioral Health

Washington, DC—Today is the first day of the newly established District of Columbia Department of Behavioral Health combining treatment and support for residents with mental and/or substance use disorders. The new Department merges the former Department of Mental Health and the Addiction Prevention Recovery Administration. The addresses and telephone numbers for all services remain the same.

Department of Mental Health Launches Forensic Fellowship Program in Psychiatry at Saint Elizabeths Hospital
