DMH Celebrates Mental Health Month with Fun Fair, African Dance, Youth/Adult Basketball Game and Awards Dinner

(Washington, DC) The DC Department of Mental Health has something for everyone in this year's lineup of "May is Mental Health Month" activities. DMH is sponsoring:
  • Saturday, May 14: Family Fun and Community Fair, featuring games, hand dancing, a moon bounce, refreshments, balloon sculptures and more at Emery Recreation Center, Georgia Avenue and Madison Street, NW, from 11 am to 3 pm.
  • Wednesday, May 18: The Kankouran West African Dance Company will perform at St. Elizabeths Hospital Chapel, 10 am to 11 am, 2700 Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, SE, use Gate 4 to enter the campus. This event is free.
  • Thursday, May 19: Youth vs. Adults Basketball Game. Last year's game was s a blowout with the youth crushing the adults. This year, the adults vow to do their best. Come and see if history repeats itself, Sherwood Recreation Center, 10th and G Streets, NE, 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm.
  • Thursday, May 19: "Rising Against All Odds, A Celebration of Life," awards ceremony and dinner to celebrate the achievements of DC Community Services Agency consumers in their process of building mental health recovery and resilience, at 6 pm, Washington Navy Yard Conference Center, Building 211, 1411 Parsons Avenue, SE.

"Having fun is as much a part of sound mental health as exercising contributes to sound physical health," said DMH Director Martha B. Knisley. "We want to introduce the public to the range of mental health topics and these events allow us to do that."

"May is Mental Health Month" is a nationwide celebration sponsored by the national Mental Health Association to raise public awareness of mental health issues. This year's theme, "MIND Your Health," focuses on the mind-body connection.
