Scholarships Available to National Mental Health Conferences

The District of Columbia Department of Behavioral Health is offering a limited number of scholarships for self-identified consumers of behavioral health services or their family members to attend the Mental Health America 2017 Annual Conference: Sex, Drugs, Rock & Roll, from June 14-June 16, 2017, or the National Alliance for Mental Health (NAMI) convention: Educate, Empower, or Engage, from June 28-July 1, 2017. Both meetings will be held in Washington, DC.

The purpose of the scholarship is to provide continuing education opportunities to individuals impacted by mental health and/or substance use disorders. To be eligible to apply, you also must be a District resident or at least 18 years of age. The scholarship will cover the conference registration fee only. Ground transportation will be considered on a case by case basis.

To apply, please submit a completed application no later than midnight, Friday, March 17, 2017, by email to [email protected]. You also the can mail or hand-deliver the application to the Department of Behavioral Health, 64 New York Avenue NE, 3rd Floor, Washington, DC 20002. Mental Health America is a national, community-based organization dedicated to addressing the needs of those living with mental illness and promoting the overall mental health of Americans. The annual conference will discuss issues that impact many in the mental health and addiction communities every day—including sexual trauma and its aftermath—and how to  promote hope and recovery; the opioid epidemic, self-medicating and addition, and whether there is a connection between the genius mind and serious mental health concerns and addiction.  For more information, go to http://www.mentalhealthamerica.net/2017-conference-agenda.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. At the NAMI convention, people living with a mental illness and their families will provide their own important perspectives on recovery, researchers and clinicians will share information and tools to advance and sustain recovery from mental illness, and attendees will visit Capitol Hill to advocate for mental health. The Department of Behavioral Health reserves the right to decline an incomplete application. No application will be accepted after the deadline. Applicants selected to receive a scholarship will be notified by April 1, 2017.
