Treatment Services

Substance Use Disorder Assessment and Referral Sites

Description of Services: The Assessment and Referral sites provide same day assessment and referral for individuals seeking treatment for substance use disorders. To refer to the appropriate program, qualified clinicians conduct an assessment that includes the nature of the addiction, use history, any mental health care needs, and overall health status. Once the appropriate level of care is determined, an individual can choose from a list of providers certified to offer treatment tailored to personal experience and life circumstances. Services include detoxification, treatment including medication assisted treatment, individual and group counseling, self-help and recovery activities, and, in some cases, residential treatment. Women can bring their children under 10 years old to live with them in certain residential programs.
Priority referral is available for individuals living with HIV/AIDS, women with children and pregnant women.

Easy Access to Services:  You can walk into an Assessment and Referral site without an appointment or call them to schedule an appointment. You must be at least 21 years old, a District resident, and bring a photo ID.

Language and Sign Language Interpretation Services:  Assistance is available for limited or no English speaking individuals.

Same Day HIV Testing: Avoid the Risks. GET TESTED. One in six people living with HIV don’t know it. If you engage in behaviors that put you in contact with certain bodily fluids, you may be at risk for getting HIV. Anyone practicing risky behaviors while under the influence of substances is more likely to make poor decisions, which increases the risk for contracting HIV.

What if I think I am at risk or think I have contracted HIV?

GET TESTED. Testing is quick and easy. Know the risks and avoid risky behaviors. You can walk in and be tested the same day. To schedule an appointment, you must be 21 years old and a District resident.

What if I test positive for HIV?

Don’t panic. The diagnosis can be life-changing and on the spot counseling is available. Treatment should be started right away and DBH will transport you to a medical provider to be seen immediately. With treatment, people are living longer than ever before.

How do I know if I am at risk?

Risk factors are:

  • Having unprotected sex
  • Having sex with multiple partners
  • Remaining sexually active with a sexually transmitted disease or infection
  • Sharing needles or syringes injection or drug equipment with someone who has HIV
  • Exchanging sex for food, shelter, drugs or money
  • Skipping prescribed HIV medications

You should also GET TESTED  if:

  •  You have been sexually assaulted
  •  You are a woman who is planning to get pregnant or is pregnant
