<?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /?>Washington, DC—Dr. Albert Fernandez-Milo, a former director of the Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program at Bellevue Hospital Center in New York, has been appointed Director of Medical Affairs at St. Elizabeths Hospital, the District’s state psychiatric hospital.

Dr. Fernandez-Milo is currently the Medical Director of Substance Abuse Services at the Healthcare System Veterans Administration in Miami, Florida.  He completed his residency in Psychiatry at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and held various management, clinical and academic positions in New York for more than ten years.  

“The professional expertise and experience that Dr. Fernandez-Milo brings will help St. Elizabeths reform its management and clinical operations to improve the quality of patient care,” said Dr. Patrick Canavan, Chief Executive Officer of the Hospital.

In addition, Dr. Canavan announced the appointment of Dr. Farooq Mohyuddin as Director of the Psychiatry Residency Training Program.  Dr. Mohyuddin, himself a graduate of the residency program, is an outpatient psychiatrist at Georgetown University and a member of the Psychiatry faculty at Howard University. 

“These clinical positions are critical to carrying out the reform initiatives taking place at the Hospital under the new leadership team,” said Stephen T. Baron, Director of the Department of Mental Health which operates the Hospital.

The Director of Medical Affairs supervises all clinical programs and activity at the Hospital, including the psychiatry residency training program. The four-year psychiatry residency training program—which began in 1938—attracts medical students from top universities around the world and has a current enrollment of 35 residents.
