Washington, DC—The Saint Elizabeths Hospital 8th Annual Summer Concert Series kicks off at 7:00 pm, Thursday, June 5, with a performance by Mystic Warriors. Mystic Warriors was founded by Andres and Marco Mallea in Washington, D.C. For more than 20 years, it has performed its unique style of music—the fusion of ethnic Andean instruments and melodies with contemporary sounds and arrangement—at the Kennedy Center and at festivals, foreign embassies, museums, and public events across the country. They also have performed recitals at universities and colleges, and they present an educational program on Andean culture and music in public schools.
Open to the public, the Hospital’s free concerts showcase a variety of music, including jazz, hip hop, rock and roll, and folk music sure to please various musical tastes. The concerts take place at 7:00 pm, every Thursday through August 28, 2014, on the Hospital grounds, 1100 Alabama Avenue SE, near the Congress Heights Metro Station (Green Line).
Saint Elizabeths started the summer concert series to celebrate its pioneer role in music and dance therapy as a mechanism for healing and expression. “The concerts are fun events integrated into our treatment and recovery process. Music and dance can be used as a tool for individuals in care to communicate and express themselves”, said Dr. Patrick Canavan, Hospital Chief Executive Officer. “The concerts are another opportunity for individuals in care to connect with family, friends and the community.”
“Music has been an integral part of treatment at Saint Elizabeths since the 1890s. The summer concerns carry on this legacy, ” said Stephen T. Baron, Director, District of Columbia Department of Behavioral Health which operates the Hospital.
To maintain the privacy of individuals in care, cameras are not permitted on the Hospital campus. In addition, all visitors must present a government-issued photo ID for entry to the campus. Saint Elizabeths Hospital is a non-smoking campus!
